Dealing with Vertigo? We can help.

Have you ever experienced that unsettling sensation of the room spinning around you?

Chances are, you were dealing with vertigo.

Women suffering vertigo

Vertigo affects many people, but is easily treatable.

Many people encounter lightheadedness or dizziness at some point, but when you consistently feel like the world is whirling around you, as though you just stepped off a playground roundabout, it’s likely vertigo.

If you suffer from vertigo, you understand that it’s no laughing matter. It can disrupt your sleep, make even simple movements feel treacherous, and have a significant impact on your balance and confidence.

What many people may not realize is that vertigo is a symptom rather than a standalone condition.

The dizziness characterizing vertigo typically stems from one of two causes: a disruption in the balance organs of the inner ear or issues within the brain or sensory nerve pathways. The causes can range from serious issues, infection, migraines, head injuries, certain medications, inflammation of the vestibular nerve, OR a condition known as benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), where specific head movements trigger vertigo.

BPPV is one of the most common disorders affecting balance. It is estimated that BPPV accounts for approximately up to 40% of all diagnosed cases of vertigo. BPPV primarily affects adults, and it becomes more prevalent with age, particularly among individuals over 60.

At St George health our Osteopaths are trained to perform several tests to help identify the root cause of your vertigo. We can then effectively treat most common types of inner ear-related vertigo using a variety of techniques, such as the Epley Maneuver.

The Epley Maneuver is a proven technique that osteopaths employ to alleviate vertigo symptoms. During this manoeuvre, your osteopath guides you through four distinct head movements, repositioning the crystalline substances within the inner ear that frequently lead to vertigo symptoms. Our practitioners are experienced and trained in using these treatments for B.P.P.V. They can be incredibly effective.
