Sever’s Disease (calcaneal apophysitis) is the inflammation of the growth plate in the heel in growing children. Usually occurs more so in active adolescents.
Symptoms
-heel pain during and after sport, physical activity
-pain when pressing heel from it’s sides.
Causes
-overuse injury, repetitive heel movement caused by the ligaments and tendons attached to heel bone leading to strain and overloading at point of growth plate.
-most common in children with over pronated feet putting increased traction at growth plate.
Treatment options
-ice after sport, physical activity, wrapped in towel to prevent ice burns.
-rest
-strapping
-orthotics where appropriate
-heel lifts
-foot mobilisation techniques
-review of footwear, especially football boots and runners.
-gentle calf stretches and massaging before and after sport/physical activity to reduce the traction on the heels
-avoiding excessive running on hard surfaces
